This has been done as a desperate measure to try and protect and save our remaining few rhinos. In the last three years we have lost no less than eight rhinos to poaching – three of them were pregnant at the time. In some cases, their horns were hacked off with pangas while they were still alive and wounded. This is unimaginable and something that no animal should endure. On a previous occasion we drilled holes in the rhino’s horn which were then filled with poison and a red die to try and discourage the poachers. This unfortunately was not very effective and a decision was taken to remove the horns totally.
